Yes to all of this. I inherited generational trauma, not generation wealth. I will put these steps to the test. The third step is new to me, and I can’t wait to try it. Thanks.
Many of us—consciously or not—believe that we have to suffer to make money. We’ve been taught that unless we inherit wealth, building financial abundance requires endless hustle, sacrifice, and struggle. While there may be some truth to that narrative, it’s not the only path—and it doesn’t have to be yours.
The reality is that many of us inherit generational trauma, not generational wealth.
This results in emotional blocks that quietly sabotage our financial well-being. These blocks operate in the background, rooted in old pain, survival patterns, and limiting beliefs—keeping us stuck in scarcity, even when we’re trying to do “all the right things.”
But here’s the good news: once we address these internal blocks, manifesting money becomes not only possible—but easier. And in today’s uncertain economic climate, exploring our own hidden abundance potential isn’t just exciting—it’s something we can’t afford to ignore.
Why Traditional Manifestation Isn’t Enough
In my book, Heal Your Past to Manifest Your Future: Trauma-Informed Practices to Release Emotional Blocks and Open Up to Possibilities, I outline a three-step, trauma-informed approach to manifesting. These three steps—regulate, reparent, and rewire—can help you manifest anything, including money.
Don’t worry, this approach doesn’t require you to dig up every painful memory. It’s not about retraumatizing yourself—it’s about gently shifting out of survival mode so that your mind, body, and energy are finally aligned with what you truly desire.
This type of alignment is important because it goes beyond surface-level positive thinking advice. It gets to the heart of what most manifestation teachings overlook:
A chronically dysregulated nervous system and a wounded inner child will block manifesting what doesn’t feel safe—every time. Without their consent, we remain stuck in patterns of self-protection over growth.
In other words, we need to learn how to feel safe manifesting our desires. That’s why my approach starts with healing the root cause of resistance rather than bypassing it and jumping into vision boards or affirmations.
The Three Trauma-Informed Steps to Manifesting Money
1. Regulate Your Nervous System
Before you manifest money, you have to feel safe thinking about it. Start by noticing what happens in your body when money comes up.
Do you tense up when opening bills? Feel annoyed and critical around wealthy people? Freeze when it’s time to look at your bank account? Do you feel overwhelmed when visualizing success—or avoid it altogether? Are you great a helping other people with their money goals, but neglect achieving your own?
These are signs of a stress response—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. To shift these survival patterns, pause and regulate. Take a few deep breaths. Lower your shoulders. Ground yourself in the present. This simple habit sends a signal to your brain:
“Money is not a threat. I can handle this.”
Over time, a regulated nervous system will expand your capacity to receive, allow you to take inspired financial action, and help you develop a calm, confident relationship with money.
2. Reparent Your Inner Child
Your inner child is basically younger versions of you. For many people, wounded inner child parts tend to get triggered around money. You might notice this when you think about money and suddenly feel helpless, fearful, or anxious. In those moments, try asking yourself:
“How old do I feel right now?”
That simple question helps you identify the “younger version of you” who’s showing up—one who may still be carrying unhealed financial fear, shame, or scarcity.
For example, you might notice that getting an unexpected bill makes you feel helpless even though you can afford it. You check inside to see what got triggered and realize that it reminds you of a time when you were twelve and your parents couldn’t afford to get you school supplies. Now you can address this twelve-year-old part of you.
Reparenting means stepping into your wise adult self and offering your inner child safety and support. In Internal Family Systems (IFS), this process is called “unblending”—separating your adult self from the activated inner part so you can respond with compassion.
Unblending helps you stay centered and in the driver’s seat when it comes to your money goals. Rather than feeling taken over by a younger part of you, you’ll be able to have a relationship with it.
One way to think about this step is that it’s like regulating your inner child’s nervous system so they feel safe.
When you provide your inner child with regulation and reassurance, you’re no longer hijacked by fear. You stay centered, grounded, and aligned with your money goals.
3. Rewire Your Brain to Open to New Possibilities
The final step is about rewiring your brain to open to new possibilities. This means only engaging with your goals when you’re in what I call a “manifesting mood”—a state of regulation or positive emotion.
Why? Because neurons that fire together, wire together.
When you visualize wealth, read about abundance, or use affirmations only while feeling good, your brain starts linking success with safety and joy—not fear and threat. Over time, you’ll feel more optimistic and even begin to expect good things to happen. As you can imagine, this can quickly become a self-fulfilling prophecy!
Here’s what this might look like in practice:
- Looking at your dream home on Zillow only when you feel grounded and optimistic
- Playing empowering music while making a vision board
- Pausing to comfort your inner child if affirmations trigger fear or doubt
- Regulating your nervous system before paying bills
- Reading finance books when you’re in a good mood—so your brain associates money with the confidence that you can handle larger sums
- Visualizing your dream life only when you feel regulated—and stopping if anxiety arises
- Meditating or exercising so you feel regulated before scripting your goals
And when you’re not in a manifesting mood? No problem. Go back to regulating. Reparent. Or simply live your life and come back to your vision later.
Final Thoughts
As you begin to feel safer with the idea of having more money, your limiting beliefs will naturally lose their grip. You’ll start to identify as someone who is calm, capable, and confident with money. And that version of you?
Unstoppable.
You won’t be striving and hoping anymore—you’ll be expecting. You’ll start having fun, finding new opportunities, and asking for more. And one day, people might look at you and assume you were always this abundant, maybe even independently wealthy. But you’ll know the truth:
You did the inner work.
You made yourself feel safe to receive.
And now, you’re living a life that once felt impossible.
